Aladdin and Jasmine in love

This is my next reference: a super cute composition with Aladdin and Jasmine. It's much easier to copy a stand alone character than multiple, especially if they are making contact (that gives more opportunities to mess up). I can see myself drawing Aladdin easily but struggling to make Jasmine look right, especially with this tilt on her face. So I'm going to really observe this image first before I make a move.

After all, copy is all about observing and noticing!

Aladdin and Jasmine: lines of action, basic shapes

These are the main shapes and lines of action that I can see. Aladdin's head is an oval facing up, while his shoulders are rectangular and facing down. Jasmine's face is triangular and facing down, and her arms also form a triangle. Her raised up shoulders are very much on a line, and it's surprising to me how far her skull extends behind her face. If I were drawing Jasmine off the top of my head, I wouldn't have known to place the back of her head like this.

There are actually very few main elements in this pic: their faces, shoulders, his big hat, and her huge hair.

The art style of Aladdin and Jasmine

Are Aladdin and Jasmine made of crescents??

Seriously, it's a recurring shape in their design. The style of Aladdin is especially soft and rounded compared to movies like Pocahontas and Hercules, where the designs are more angular. Have you ever noticed?

Aladdin and Jasmine: Disney Study

Some final impressions!

Jasmine's thick hair overlaps with his face. She looks really sweet and happy.

Aladdin is looking way up and he's very expressive. One eye is higher than the other, while his nose and lips seem misaligned to show his chin is a bit forward, like he's thinking.

It's funny but it even looks like there's a ripple effect (all the half circles) with Aladdin's face as the center.
